My name? It’s an interesting writing prompt. My full name is actually İrem Gökçe Gök. In Turkish, names are generally given based on their meanings. Some corrupted individuals might name someone after a word mentioned in the Quran. Like my father. The name İrem comes from Arabic and the Quran. Its meaning is said to be ‘false paradise.’ Gökçe; on the other hand, is the name I use and love. It would be a shame not to love pure Turkish. Instead of Arabicizing, I stay Turkish. It should be that way. Please bear with my nationalist side; it shows up occasionally. Gökçe has two meanings. One is ‘godess of sky,’ and the other is ‘someone with beautiful eyes.’ It actually fits well with my surname. There’s a story behind the Gök surname, although it’s not much of a story, it emerged when the surname law was introduced. At that time, my ancestor’s eyes were blue. Gök already means the sky, so he said, ‘Let the surname be related to the sky.’ They accepted it. There are certainly more beautiful stories out there, but this is how ours goes.
